Varanassi

We only spent a short time in Varanassi, but those hours were very interesting and full.  When we got off the plane it was 110 degrees F!  We wanted to get down to the ghats for the evening ceremony.  It was too crowded for the bus to get there, so we piled out and all got in rickshaws and made our way to the Ganges.

The rickshaws dropped us off and we had a short walk to the river where we boarded a boat and set out on the river.

The fires on the shore are from the cremations that take place along the river 24/7.

The next morning, before dawn, we headed back down to the ghats.  We took another boat ride and watched the sunrise.  People were bathing in the river, and some young monks were making offerings to begin their day.

Khajuraho

OK, I know it's been awhile now since I went to India.  But I never finished posting my photos.  I have a few more to show, so I'll try to post those in the next week or so.

Khajuraho, to the south of Delhi, has a beautiful complex of 25 temples, including the Kandariya Mahadev Temple.  The towers are covered with elaborate carvings.  This complex was built about 900 - 1100 AD, before the similar-looking Ankor Wat in Cambodia.  The complex was abandoned by its Chandela rulers and was hidden by the jungles until it was "rediscovered" in 1838.

We were lucky to have a personalized tour of the older section of town.

Quilts for Mayan Families

Here are a few more quilts made for Mayan Families' orphan program.  The baby quilt below was pieced by Chris R. of Vancouver.

And Cherries Jubilee below was made by Pat S. of Anchorage.

Here's another by the Vancouver group.

Work on Guatemala Bound Quilts Continues

It's been awhile since I posted photos of finished quilts for Guatemala Bound.  That's not because folks haven't been working.  The wall where I take photos was being used for another purpose, and it took me awhile to clean it up enough to take photos again.  Also, I had to transfer all my organized photos to a different computer, and lost much of my organization in the process.  I still haven't recovered from that.

Anyway, here are four of the quilts finished recently.  The top two are from the Vancouver group.

This quilt, Fire Bolt, was made by Uta Lenk, who is from Germany.

And this quilt was donated by Joan B. of Anchorage.  She bought it at a garage sale, and sent it on to be finished.

Thanks again to all for being generous with their time.

You Can Order My Book, Guatemala Bound

I've published my book, Guatemala Bound!

I first visited Guatemala in 2008.  A trip to an orphanage in Santa Apolonia inspired me to begin a project to provide quilts for all the children there. I enlisted the help of friends from across the country.  During the next three years, 100 quilts were created. In January, 2012, two friends and I personally delivered the last eight of the 100 quilts to the orphanage   Each child, caregiver and administrator at the orphanage received a quilt.

You can view the book and purchase a copy at the link below.  Enjoy!
